In this section you'll find nuggets of information that will free you to complete your job.
King Pin Diameter
As near as dammit 18mm plus .03 more accurate you do not need to be because your going to ream and hone the brass bushings to exactly match your King Pins - You just need to know what expandable reamer range you need. So from less than to more than 18mm
New transaxles in old Beetles
Such a pain but you can fit a modern freeway flyer in a pre 60's beetle all you need is VW part number VWC211 301 205H its a 60 - 67 Kombi nose cone complete with necessary hockey stick 113 311 541 swap out the one that has come with your freeway flyer, its a straight fit and magically your new gear box will fit straight into your old beetle!
The Threaded hole is for a reversing light switch you can simply plug it off or fit reversing lights. The choice is yours.
Steering box positioning
Of course trial and error will get you there but how nice to have a starting point. So from centre of beam to centre of large adjusting nut is xxxxx mm for RHD cars for left hookers its xxx mm
Engine Numbers
Engine codes It’s always interesting to know what engine’s in your Beetle and you can check by looking at the prefix. Engine number prefixes were first used in 1965 with the introduction of the 1300, with other Beetle numbers as follows:A = 1200 30bhp
So if you dont have a prefix then its older than 65 D = 1200 34bhp E = 1300 37bhp F = 1300 40bhp H = 1500 44bhp L = 1500 40bhp AB = 1300 44bhp AC = 1300 40bhp AD = 1600 50bhp AE = 1600 48bhp (US) AF = 1600 46bhp AG = 1600 44bhp (Type 181) AH = 1600 48bhp (US) AJ = 1600 50bhp (fuel injection) AK = 1600 48bhp (US) AL = 1600 48bhp (Type 181) AM = 1600 48bhp (Type 181, US) AR = 1300 44bhp AS = 1600 50bhp
